Summary0004590: Runtime error R6034 when launching on Windows 7
Description

I have installed Slicer 4.8.1 using the Windows installer from https://download.slicer.org/ . When launching, an error dialog box appears 9 times (i.e. when I press OK, another appears, in total 9 times) - see the attached screenshot for the error message. This happens while the splash screen reads "Instantiating modules". After I confirm all the errors, slicer loads and works normally, but one think I noticed is that I don't have the "editor" module, only "segmentation editor" - but according to the documentation the "editor" should still be in (don't know if this is related to the error or not). The nightly 4.9 version does the same, but an older 4.6.2 I had installed does not.

Steps To Reproduce

1) Install Slicer 4.8.1 release on a Windows 7 64-bit machine from the official installer
2) Double-click Slicer.exe

Do you still have this problem? I don't see that it's been reported by anyone else and I don't see this on my windows 10 systems. I believe we have a lot of Windows 7 users who don't have this problem so maybe it's a conflict with some other software on your machine?

Yes I do. Could be some conflict, but as I said, the 4.6.2 works with no problems, I am not sure what change that happened between these versions could cause this though.

Well we have updated a lot since 4.6.2, so it's not too surprising there's different behavior, but it doesn't really explain why other windows 7 machines seem to work okay. Have you tried a different machine?

Yes, it works on other machines in our office, I was just hoping that maybe somebody encoutered this before and could give me pointers to what could be causing the issue.

I'd guess it's a conflict with some other software installed on that machine. Sometimes app developers change global settings during installation in a way that forces incompatible libraries to override what other apps need. If you really want to get to the bottom of this there are lots of sysadmin utilities to track what is going on (see wininternal from microsoft for example) or just compare the system environment (particularly the Path variable) on this machine with other machines that work and see if there's an obvious difference.

Good luck - since this is something unique to one machine and it's not really a Slicer-specific issue I'm going to close the issue. Feel free to post any follow up information you discover.

Appears not to be a slicer-specific issue.
