Summary0004457: 3D view renders object as black
Description

When rotating a model in the 3D view, the model renders mainly as black but flashes the segment color. It has something to do with the lighting in the 3D view because when the lighting setting is turned off, the model is rendered with the correct color. However, the rendering then has no shadows, making it difficult to see the details.

Steps To Reproduce

Open any DICOM file and create a labelmap either in the Editor module or SegmentEditor module. Then, export the labelmap to a 3D model and view in the 3D viewer.

Thanks for the report. Can you attach a screenshot to give a better idea of what you are describing? Also can you try the latest nightly build to see if it's still an issue (we are working on a new release based on the Nightly very soon).

Thanks for the quick reply! Just tried with the new release on Nightly and it still renders as black :(.

Interesting - this may be something specific to your computer, perhaps a video card or driver issue. I notice that the letters "I" and "L" which should be white are also rendered in black and that the background has a line in the middle top.

Do other things look normal in the 3D view? Like if you try any of the datasets from a tutorial do they match what is shown in the slides?

I just downloaded a .stl file from a tutorial and it renders black as well. I've attached a couple more images and added links to videos that might help! If I move the model to a very specific part (as seen in the second image) then it renders normally but for the most part will be black. Additionally, if I go to Modules > Models > Display > 3D Display > Advanced and uncheck the "Lighting" option, then it has the correct color but just no shadows (as in the third attached image).

Link to video (can see blinking of it rendering correctly but mostly rendering as black):

Thanks!

Sorry, mistake in previous note. The screenshots with the lighting turned off is the first screenshot. I've just added a screenshot in this note where I have the model in the very specific position where it renders correctly.

Oh sorry, the order keeps changing on those screenshots. The one with the lighting off is the screenshot with the model colored grey but with no shadows rendering.

I just tried the slicer nightly on a different linux machine and it worked correctly! So sorry about that. Thank you so much for you help and time!

Thanks for the careful testing. It sounds like this was an issue with the graphics card or driver. If you find that the issue is reproducible on other machines please report back.
