Summary0003797: Slicer logo steals considerable space from the module UIs
Description

The Slicer logo along with the Data probe blocks out considerable part of the module UIs, which makes it difficult to handle complex modules (such as BRAINS registration, Subject hierarchy or Dose volume histogram in SlicerRT among others).

In numbers, it looks like this on a FullHD (1920x1080) monitor:

  • Slicer logo: ~72px (8%)
  • Module UI: ~700px (78%)
  • Data probe: ~125px (14%)
    This gets even worse with smaller monitors or when Slicer is not run in full screen.
    Although the Data probe is needed and cannot be moved within reason, the Slicer logo could move somewhere to free up valuable real estate.

Suggestions:

  • Right side of the Data probe (it doesn't use all the space it has) (number 1 in attached image - my favorite choice)
  • Far right side of the toolbar (number 2 in attached image)
  • A smaller logo where it fits and expands temporarily when hovered (such as number 3 in image - not so good)

I like option 2.

I don't like option 1 because Data Probe can be collapsed, and Slicer logo will disappear.

I would vote none.

Option 2 seems to be the best in all options. but it is a bit redundant as the title bar already has same info (logo and title) and option 2 will only add a slightly larger logo.

but if a logo is needed anyway, option 2 will be the best.

Actually on Mac there is no logo in the window title bar

We discussed this at the NA-MIC week in Salt Lake City last week, and the conclusion is that:

  • Best solution is Slicer logo on the Data Probe when not used
    • Not ideal implementation, need to play around (I'll do it and try to find a nice implementation, but anyone is welcome to do so)
  • Slice view annotation settings goes to Application settings (there are no per-viewer settings yet, so this easy solution will do for the time being)
