Summary0002031: Load data functionality
Description

We should provide a single interface for loading all data into Slicer, with the exception of the DICOM widget. Load scene, add scene, add data and add volume all have partially overlapping capabilities but are not identical. This is confusing both to novice and experienced users. We must unify the user experience.

Data type is a pull down menu for a filter: mrml, .nrrd, etc. should be offered. All is the default
Add to Scene toggle to Overwrite Scene
Show and edit selected should pop up a different panel which allows to remove things, and allows to modify options.

Is this still an up-to-date feature request ?

yes. We should also add the options capability. Ultimately, I want to have a single place to load/add data etc. Same with save

Jc: Would it be possible to clarify how we should update the current dialog ?

Note for Sankhesh:

  • The idea is to redesign the existing dialog (or create a new one ..) so that it look like the mock up uploaded by Ron
  • A additional column should be added, this column should present the type of data to load/add (Fiber bundle, Scalar Overlay, Volume, ... ). See the Description column of the existing dialog
  • When creating this dialog, it should be designed so that it look like the "save dialog" as much as possible. That way user will get less confused.
  • A button "Load DICOM" should be added. This button will then open the existing DICOM loading facilities.

We should discuss this and make a plan. It's a needed change, but it's not for 4.3.
