Summary0001383: fiducials slow down volume rendering
Description

Having fiducials visible signicantly slows down the volume rendering. This happens independent of the render engine selected. I tried all three that work at all. The slow down is directly proportional to the number of fiducials present. It makes the combination of fiducials and volume rendering unworkable.

Steps To Reproduce

download sample data mri brain
place several fiducials
volume render
select fiducial hierarchy and make fiducials invisible
volume render

I checked and this problem does not exist in Slicer3. I tested in 3.6.3 8-20 nightly on mac

Nicole, Alex, Daniel and I met on this yesterday and have this in the Performance and Stability section of the plan:

http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/Projects:ARRA:miAnnotation:Feedback

At this point Nicole has written some low level tests to see if she can characterize the performance impact of the various annotation types (particularly in large numbers).

It looks like there are leaks to fix in annotations. If these clear up and there is still an issue then the interaction between Volume Rendering and Widgets is likely to be at the vtk level and will require help from Will/Julien, etc.

There is a slow down on linux with 10 fiducials, though it seems to speed up after a few interactions with the fids visible.

This seems to have benefitted from various speed ups, is it still a problem for you?

I agree, the problem seems to have disappeared.
